Sunset - A village tribe is gathered around a fire as the VILLAGE LEADER addresses the people.
VILLAGE LEADER
Thank you all for meeting here, I'll lead us to the matter at hand
Our last four seasons saw our village stuck with devastating lands
We stand here understanding why our land's so dire
Last year we prayed each day but failed to pay the god our fire
Tradition goes along, the chosen one will take our flame
Take it to the god, who lives across the country plains
VILLAGERS
Let’s forget last year’s select, he didn’t too well he-
upheld the flame but had no fire burning in his belly
VILLAGE LEADER
The god has woken for his payment
The arrangement will begin
I have no say in who is chosen
It's the will of the winds
Who? Who? Who? Who will mind the fire?
The village leader drops magic dust into the fire. The wind blows into the fire and a gust of fire swirls into the skies, before targeting an 8-year-old girl OLAYA, knocking her onto the ground.
ALL
Huh? Olaya?
OLAYA
Uhhh...hiya?
The background dissolves to Olaya’s room where she’s packing her things. She can see the villagers from outside her window (hut hole).
I hear them laughing at me
They'll blame the drought upon me
I can feel the shame around me
Hear them shame my name
The villagers are gossipping to each other while performing chores.
VILLAGERS
Olaya. Olaya.
I can't believe our village needs
This child, a child
To get us off our knees
Olaya. The crier.
Hey now don't be cruel.
You know it's rude to ridicule
A girl in need of a hug and love
I've seen her shadow even scared of its own shadow
What's the matter with her, yes I know her mother left her, she'll be with her soon
She'll be fine, alright I'm lying, she'll die beside the others.
But let's just keep that from one mother to another
Olaya talks to her deceased mother as she finishes packing.
OLAYA
Mother, mother. I need to talk with you
Ever since you passed, I don't know what to do
Now I'm the fire holder
The whole village on my shoulder, it's an order
Why oh why did god decide that I'm the fire-
minder? I've got no might or right to fight this
Got no right mind, I'm not the kind for this
But I'm a trier, a trier
And I got that trait from you, got it straight from you
And now we're due to prove what you and I can do
Olaya leaves her room and heads towards the fire where the tribe and village leader give her the torch of the village’s fire.
VILLAGE LEADER
Olaya, this fire will guide the light for you
But it is up to you to toil through the soil and mire
Oh my I, can see your mother's eyes within your eyes
They're both comprised of loving times and a rising desire
The village leader gives Olaya the torch.
VILLAGERS
Olaya. Olaya
You’re our one and only hope
Olaya, Olaya
To stop our death toll growing
Higher, higher
The divine is waiting, no debating,
All our vegetation’s permeations rests its fate on your…
Olaya leaves the tribe and exits the village, carrying the torch.
OLAYA (ALL)
Fire, Olaya
(this village holds its breath for you)
I'll do whatever is required
(Olaya)
(We pray each step that you connect with sends you to the god's pyre)
I'll do what makes my mother inspired
And you'll be right by me (Olaya)
Your fire's right inside me (fire)
(God oh god, please get this light to you)
God oh god, I'll get this light to you
Olaya is just outside the village, and is unsure where to go. She turns to the villagers one last time.
...Uh, this way?
Montage of Olaya trekking through the land, going through wildly different terrain and weather.
OLAYA
One step, to get, to two, then another and then another
And then I'm gonna get a step closer to just what I got to do
My quest, it's just taking one flame to another.
Then the summer and winter cover will fill our fields with food
They say my shadow's even scared of its own shadow
What they don't know is my shadow and myself are scared of our own echo
Echo, echo, echo (echo, echo) Ahhhhh!
I hear the echoes echoing the voices of the past
VILLAGERS
Olaya. Olaya.
You’re our one and only hope
Please watch that fire! The fire!
The voices from the cave alert Olaya to water dripping from the cave that nearly hits the fire.
OLAYA
Woah. Thanks guys, that was close.
They said, this trek, will only take a day or two
Or was it a week? Or was it a month? I've really got no clue
Oh well, I'm set, I've got my fire and my mother too
Just cannot let this flame get wet
Is that rain? What do I do?
What counts as shelter? What's that noise? Why is this rash so itchy?
What blocks the pelter? Was that poison? Why's my eye so twitchy?
I'm following the moonlight, and I'm following the sun
Just hope I get these steps right. If not, oh god, we're done.
They say the villagers are starving, dying, no crops can grow
But once god has this fire, the water will flow
Crops rise from the ground as part of Olaya’s imagination.
And the plants will rise to the skies
Food for each family and feasts each night
And you'll be up there watching me with pride
Olaya, you just kept on keeping on
With one step, to skip and leap into the other, and my mother
Always had a phrase you'd mutter. Seemed to get me through
Ignore the unpleasant trees, and focus on the feeling that’s within
Just find the pleasantries of life, and you’ll be bright when lights are dim
Ignore the sunburn, that burns my skin
Ignore the dust storm, and the freezing winds
Ignore my mistakes and the sore aches and that roar that I hear
Ignore the silhouette of that animal, and- oh my god that looks near
Olaya sees the silhouette of animal approach her, unafraid of the fire.
It's coming here, can it smell my fear? What's the difference between a bear and a tiger?
This fire, I wave it but the beast's not caving. There's no saving me,
I see its claws, I see its teeth, I see it's-
The mysterious beast attacks Olaya and knocks her out. Fade to black.
Olaya lies on the ground and starts to regain consciousness. Her torch has been dropped and is barely flickering in the rain.
OLAYA
I hear them laughing at me
The echoes echoing the doubt
At how I could never do it
But though this fire's nearly dying
There's a fire still inside me
A memory of when
You tried to fight through it
Olaya stares into the fire and sees a memory of her with her mother resting in bed.
When you fell ill...when you fell ill...
When you fell ill, your body was tiring
But your heart kept beating on
And when you were dying
You told me, that you could keep on keeping on
Olaya gets on her feet, picks up the torch and gradually replenishes her and the fire’s energy.
You've got the skies, and I've got the fire
And I will fight to keep its heating on
My body may be tired
But I know that I can keep on keeping on
I'll reach my dreams, soar even higher
Fly the skies when my feet are numb
I know I will survive this
I'll just keep on keeping on
And on. Yes I will keep on keeping on…
Olaya confidently strides across the land, swirling the torch in the air like a fire dancer.
Olaya enters a brightly coloured haven on top of the hill. Her wound from the animal attack heals and the torch blazes a healthy fire.
OLAYA
Keep on keeping on
Yes I will keep on keeping on
Keep on keeping on
I am nearly there
Gotta keep on keeping on
Get ready god, because I got a little fire for ya
Oh gotta keep my feet and my wits together
Mother, do you see me arriving?
Olaya reaches the god’s pyre, a large pile of stick with a small ember glowing from the charcoals. The god’s face can be seen in the faint smoke above the pyre, like a little ghost.
Cos the god is in my sights now
One more step with this light
And my quest is done
Olaya lights the pyre with her fire and an almighty fire god takes over the sky.
GOD
Wow what a flame, what a fragrant flavour
Hotter than the others,
That's a damn life saver
And it's not just the fire, it's one who had to keep it
The harder the heart, the higher the heating
And for your lot, I'll keep my end of the deal
Sensational seasons for a yearly yield
Now before I take you home
There's someone I know, who would like to see you
Thanks for checking out all the lyrics!
As a reward for your adventurous spirit,
here’s the secret post-credit demo
The god opens up a cloud and Olaya’s mother appears.
MOTHER
Oh what a sight, my bright little child
You took on the fight, and you survived in the wild
And I've never seen anything like it before
When your body was sore,
You just kept on keeping on
And oh for god's sake, hug me child (hug me)
We haven't forever and I never wanna let you go (I'll never ever let you go)
But I'll always be that fire inside
As long as you know
That I will keep on loving you
The mother reaches down to hug Olaya and they embrace. The background dissolves to Olaya in her room as Olaya’s content face remains in the same position.
Through Olaya’s window we see God’s fire burning brightly.
